Not sure what the MESA sounds like, but this pedal is incredible! Super chunky distortion, one of my favorites so far!!

Disclaimer: I have never owned a Mesa, nor a Dr. Boogie preamp.
Regardless, this thing is incredible and sounds well within the realm of each of those. Ultra, ultra high gain with a searing presence that cuts through. Surprisingly quiet for a JFET based high gain pedal. It cleans up relatively well to bring you into classic/hard rock territory, but what’s the point? This was built for high gain metal insanity.
In my experience this does NOT work nearly as well in the FX loop. The only amp I’ve used is a Marshall Origin 20w. With my preferred amp settings (low preamp gain, high master output), I think the signal feeding into the loop must be much weaker than what’s coming out of the guitar. In the loop the gain on the pedal gets severely reduced, and actually fizzles out at the lowest settings. I think the amp loop is supposed to be in series, but maybe it’s in parallel? Idk. So, YMMV depending on the amp.
